Peer Review & Plagiarism: Policies and Editorial Workflow
The Journal of Advanced Periodontology & Implant Dentistry (JAPID) is committed to rigorous peer review, scientific integrity, and strict ethical standards. Below is a comprehensive overview of our editorial workflow, turnaround times, and plagiarism policies.
Publication Timeline At-a-Glance
- Initial Editorial Decision: ~7 days
- Peer-Review Process: 4–6 weeks
- Language Editing (Post-Acceptance): 1–2 weeks
- Proof Preparation: 2–3 weeks
- Note: In 2025, our average time from submission to acceptance was 12 weeks.
1. Initial Evaluation
All submissions undergo an initial screening by the Editor-in-Chief to ensure they adhere to submission guidelines and provide the necessary information to judge validity and suitability.
- Submissions failing to meet basic formatting or ethical requirements will be returned to the author(s) for correction and re-submission.
- Submissions that lack broad interest/significance, or are unlikely to be publishable, will be declined without further processing. This allows us to provide rapid feedback to authors and save them valuable time.
- Suitable manuscripts will directly proceed to the formal peer-review stage.
2. Double-Blind Peer Review Process
JAPID employs a strict double-blind peer review system, ensuring that both the authors and the reviewers remain completely anonymous to each other throughout the evaluation.
- The Editor-in-Chief or an Associate Editor assigns at least two external expert reviewers to each manuscript.
- Reviewers are strictly required to declare any competing interests prior to accepting an invitation.
- Based on the reviewers' critical feedback, the Editor-in-Chief will issue one of the following decisions: Reject, Resubmit (Revisions Required), or Accept.
- Revised manuscripts typically undergo another round of review, often evaluated by the original reviewers. Minor revisions, however, may be handled directly by the journal editors.
3. Publication of Accepted Submissions
Once a manuscript is scientifically accepted, it moves into the final production and publication phases:
- Language Editing: Accepted manuscripts are professionally polished by a language editor in collaboration with the authors.
- In Press & DOI Assignment: Approved papers are immediately assigned a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) and published in the journal's In Press section, making them fully citable prior to issue assignment.
- Article Proofs: Galley proofs are generated and sent to authors for final approval. Once approved, the proof replaces the accepted manuscript in the In Press section.
- Issue Assignment: Upon formal publication in a designated journal issue, the article receives its final page numbers and is moved to its permanent location on the website.
Plagiarism Policy
JAPID strictly screens all submissions for plagiarism using the Crossref Similarity Check (powered by iThenticate). The journal strictly follows the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) to handle all cases of suspected plagiarism.
- Minor Text Similarity: If minor overlap is detected during the review process, the manuscript may be returned to the authors for proper citation and correction.
- Major Plagiarism: Major plagiarism identified during the review of the submission will result in immediate rejecting of the submission. In addition, other actions per COPE guidelines may be taken to observe the high ethical standards of scholarly publishing.
- Post-Publication Discovery: Plagiarism identified post-publication will also be handled following COPE guidelines, resulting in events such as publication of a correction or full retraction of the paper.
